He married Annette Jones on July 1, 1972, at Fort Dodge, Iowa. Mike and Annette made their home in Rapid City, S.D., where he was an active member of the community and Faith Lutheran Church. Mike served as president for Prairie Market Credit Union from 1982 to 1985. Mike coached girl's softball in Rapid City and was proud that they took City Championship. He also played as an outfielder for the church softball team. He was a fan of the Chicago Bears and the Yankees.

In 1986, they moved to North Dakota, living in Minot and Fargo, where he worked as a sales representative working for various food services. He retired in 2002.

Mike was very outgoing, and loved to be with people. He had a great sense of humor. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting, and would do as much as he could while traveling. Mike enjoyed golfing, and would do so when time allowed. He often traveled to California to visit his sister, Cynthia, and family. Mike was very close to his cousin, Terry Roper.
